Displacement causes severe psycho-social repercussions for children and adolescents. Evidence from situation analysis undertaken by many international organizations and our local activists in recently IDPs from Swat indicate that significant numbers of children traumatized and also experiencing problems such as:
- Fright and insecurity
- Thoughts about war and terrorism
- Nightmares
- Concentration loss
- Social isolation, and
- Greater risk of future involvement in violence
Around 80 per cent of the displaced population is children, many of whom are suffering from trauma as a result of the conflict and their displacement.
The overall objective of the project on Psychosocial Support for Children is to help children to cope with the aftereffects of the displacement, loss of homes and families through maintaining the recreational ways (Sports Centre), which provide recreational opportunities to children in a safe and pleasant environment. In addition, caregivers at the Sports Centers are providing psychosocial support to children in need and also make them aware of their education importance, to encourage them to carry on education in camps school.
A team of Safe Winds Organization trained the young volunteer from camps to engage the children in Sports Centre for recreational activities through games and worked with parents to help them effectively support their children who have been traumatized.
